V. Alan MOORE obituary (theglobeandmail)

V. Alan MOORE (1930 - 2020)

V. ALAN MOORE August 31, 1930 - December 5, 2020 After 90 years of a life fully lived, Al slipped quietly away on December 5, 2020 in Markham. Left to mourn is his beloved wife of 63 years, Leona. He also leaves daughters, Carole (Peter van den Berg, Markham), Susan (James Reynolds, Kingston) and Jennifer (Mark Engel, Toronto) and grandsons Michael Reynolds (Lexi Pomeroy, Ottawa), Taylor Reynolds (Renee Hansuld, Seattle WA), Jack van den Berg and Matthew van den Berg, both of Markham. Brother Barry Moore (Beth Moore, Scarborough). Niece Kathryn Johnson (Cam Miller, Kingston), nephews Jeff Johnson (Jenn, London), Chris Moore (Sarah, Ajax) and Tim (Scarborough). Born in Scarborough, Al attended Birch Cliff Public School and RH King High School. He was a graduate of University of Toronto engineering class of 1953 and joined Canadian General Electric in Peterborough in 1957 spending his entire career there, retiring in 1982. His career included an exchange with AEG in Germany in 1958/59 where he and Leona made lifelong friends and found a love of travel. He represented Canada with CIGRE - the International Council on Large Electric Systems for many years and was awarded the Association of Professional Engineers Ontario Engineering Medal in 1982. Al was very active in the community and served faithfully on many committees at the former St. Andrew's United Church in Peterborough, for the Professionals Engineers of Ontario in Toronto and the restoration of Hope Mill in Keene. Al and Leona loved to travel but loved most to have a map in one hand and getting lost and discovering new places and people on the other hand. They loved to cross-country ski and, in their retirement, if there was snow on the ground, they were skiing. They also loved their time at both family cottages - Leona's beloved Gillies in Cobalt ON and the cottage on Koshlong Lake they built together. Al was a talented 'putterer', often escaping to one of the best built workshops in Peterborough to create anything from wood and made many cherished creations for all of us. In his later years, he became more serious about painting and produced a rather large body of work under the tutelage of his art teachers. Al and Leona left their home on Gordon Ave and moved first to Princess Gardens and then more recently to Bethany Lodge in Markham to be closer to family. Leona continues to live there.
